Wendy Franks has worked in personnel management and marine recruitment as well as on cruise ships and super-yachts. The Melbourne-based boat lover launched Saltwaterjobs.com this month to link prime candidates from around the world with suitable jobs at sea.

"We are the first to create a job board that will bring together employers and jobseekers of the cruise line, super-yacht and cargo industry on a global scale," MsFranks said at the launch of the website.

The site's categories include cruise-passenger ships, with subsections for deck, medical, shore-based, engine and interior work. For example, a senior deckhand is needed for a 110-metre yacht bound for the Caribbean, North America and the Arctic Circle. Before you pack, did we mentionthat previous experience and a powerboat licence are required?

Open Channel's certificate III in screen and television production course starts next month. Run in association with C31, the course will focus on all the practical aspects of television production and broadcast skills.

The entry-level course will run for 14 weeks, and students will produce a six-part series for broadcast on C31, OPEN TV. The finished product from last year's budding TV types was recently nominated for the Vocational Training Initiative of the Year Award as part of the SpArtA Verve awards.

Experienced TV producers and technicians will teach the hopefuls; the course includes planning, preproduction, production, copyright law, multi-camera switching, sound, lighting, post-production, programming, hosting and presenting, marketing and multiplatform delivery. It will run from August 10, at a cost of $4200.

Video games get blamed for everything from obesity to antisocial behaviour, but the digital animation and interactive games industries are big business. If you'd like to swap from being a player to a play maker, get along to the open day at Qantm College, 11 Jeffcott Street, West Melbourne, on August 2. Qantm offers a wide range of degrees and diplomas in new and emerging industries such as games programming, animation, new media development and graphic design. The college also has campuses in Sydney and Brisbane.

Gremlins invaded the My Career system last week and the Working Week item on the Reinvent Your Career Expo at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre had the dates muddled. The expo, for workers aged from their early 20s to late 50s, will be on the weekend of July 26-27, at a cost of $10 ($6 concession).
